April 2007

AGENDA for SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2007

NOTES: Roy McAlister national AHA president-has agreed to come out for the June meeting and to make additional presentations in the Bay Area. Tom Dickerman is heading the committee to publicize the events and he needs additional help. Main topic at April meeting.

Greetings and Introductions: Chapter President, John Gotthold, greets all attendees and asks each attendee to state their name and a short synopsis of their background and what they hope to learn by attending the meeting. 10 minutes.

1. Transportation: What fuel will power the vehicle of the future? Popular Science estimates for 2027 are Lithium-ion batteries 30%, Natural gas 3%, Cellulosic ethanol 6%, Low sulfur diesel 20%, Biodiesel 4%, Hydrogen 2%. Almost all vehicles will be hybrids of some form and some will even be self driving and navigating. That will take the fun out of driving. We will look at those estimates and see how hydrogen can do better.

2. Government Support for Hydrogen: Over 100 hydrogen stations now in US. Norway is implementing thirteen hydrogen fuel cell autos certified for highway use. Thirty fuel cell cars for Iceland. British Columbia joins the Pacific Green Bloc and the Hydrogen Highway. Over one million pounds for hydrogen projects by Scottish government. We will review documents from the National Hydrogen Association meeting in San Antonio, March 19-22. Self powered green city building planned for San Francisco. Solar Power 2007 - Long Beach Sept 24-27. Wind Power 2007, Los Angeles, June 3-6. Who can go and report?

3. Hydrogen Technology: We will do a quick review of hundreds of minor breakthroughs for hydrogen. Cumulatively these improvements will make a renewable hydrogen economy possible.

4. Hydrogen Business: Hydrogen Engine Center ships several hydrogen generators. Hydrogenics has order for 500 telco backup fuel cells. ITM shows hydrogen home refueling station. Mazda to sell hydrogen rotary by 2008. Toro producing hydrogen powered utility vehicles. Exciting times for hydrogen implementation!

5. Global Warming and Oil Depletion: Detailed study of all major oil fields, over 500 million barrels produced ultimately from the field, indicates that peak will come next year to ten years in the future. Nuclear energy for water and hydrogen production. New catalyst breakthrough and new atomic waste recycling improvements will theoretically provide nuclear powered electricity and hydrogen production far into the future.

6. Video: Electrochemistry and Fuel Cell Class. Does anyone have a computer projector?
