AGENDA for SATURDAY,
JULY 19, 2008

NOTES: Two core requirements for the hydrogen economy still lag. A dozen multi-country and multi-business efforts are being made to create low cost high performance fuel cell components and high density, light weight, low volume hydrogen storage. So far only incremental advances, no breakthroughs. 200 hydrogen stations around the world.

Greetings and Introductions: Chapter President, John Gotthold, greets all attendees and asks each attendee to state their name and a short synopsis of their background and what they hope to learn by attending the meeting. 10 minutes.

1. Transportation: One breakthrough that has occurred is ITM Power introducing low cost, but low pressure, electrolysis home stations with multi-fuel Ford of Europe cars. The good and bad news is that the stations will charge the cars with enough hydrogen to go 25 miles, then, they switch back to $8.50 per gallon gasoline. The 25 miles will cover 80% of English trips so it's the equivalent of a deep hybrid gas electric battery car, but cheaper. Gordon Brown, British PM, wants all vehicles to be electric by 2020. Fuel cell buses close to cost effective. Next generation to have a lower life cycle cost than diesel.

2. Hydrogen Technology: Volcano life holds key to hydrogen economy! Large discussion of nano science efforts for MEAs and Bi-polar plates. Cost and reliability are the keys. ITM is offering its low cost membrane for sale. QuantumSphere sells nano plates for alkaline electrolysers, 3X more hydrogen production. New dual metal solar hydrogen production.

3. Government Support for Hydrogen: Hawaii is fast becoming the alternative energy state, they have access to all forms of natural energy so many businesses utilize Hawaii for a pilot plant site. Presidential candidates, who will actually deliver green? Hydrogen energy implementation conference in Wyoming.

4. Hydrogen Business: Wind up 45 percent in 2007, to $10 Billion per year, 35% of US capacity increase. Semiconductor companies getting into solar big time, trying to improve solar cells and solar array production. Green gold rush on as major players enter.

5. Global Warming and Oil Depletion: $147 per barrel, IEA to actually state “peak oil is here” in next report.  High fuel and food costs beginning to rock developing countries around the world. Major Antarctic ice shelf breaking. Natural gas up - fertilizer down! New study shows bio-fuels responsible for 75% of food price rise!! Power needed to bury CO2 is a major factor. Corn ethanol firms going bankrupt. Australian climate report reads like a “disaster novel”.

6. AHASVC Certification: Certificate class material updates and review. Hydrogen efficiency?

7. Demonstration and Video: IER Solar Hydrogen demo made into You Tube video by AHASVC.
