NOTES: Governor signs bill on global warming. 1990 CO2 levels by 2020, Air Resources Board to be in charge of CA economy. Boeing solar division signs contract for 600,000 concentrator solar modules (10 megawatts). Chewonki, in Maine, opens. Cobalt catalyst may replace Platinum. Thin film Li-ion battery with 10,000 cycle recharges. Storage, storage, storage, scientists cram hydrogen into every type of material. Quasiturbine hydrogen engine! Hydrogen meetings all over. Gov. Kulongoski pushes for Oregon "hydrogen economy." North Atlantic Hydrogen Association!
1. Greetings and Introductions: Chapter President, John Gotthold, greets all attendees and asks each attendee to state their name and a short synopsis of their background and what they hope to learn by attending the meeting. 10 min.
2. Transportation: ZAP electric cars test low end of market. BMW to sell hydrogen 7-series limos in 2007. GM showing drivable SEQUEL. As a Chevy!!
3. Technology Update: We examine the Quasiturbine. Mid sized holes best for storing H2. We look at new H2 storage methods.
4. Government Support for Hydrogen: We examine the series of plans illustrated in the September Scientific American. Several of these will be backed by governments around the world. 1. Energy efficiency, 2. Sequestered coal, 3. The nuclear option, 4. Renewable Solar and Wind, low and high altitude, 5. Wave and tide, 6. Efficient transportation, new diesel, deep hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell. 7. Fusion- the ultimate energy source. The world will need all the above to sustain the urban lifestyle of half the worlds population.
5. Global Warming: California Legislature passes first in nation CO2 curbs bill. California joins with 11 other states to sue the Federal government to also regulate greenhouse emissions. We study the Air Resources Board. The year 2050 is now projected as the time when atmospheric CO2 reaches 450 parts per million and the Earth goes into thermal runaway. Business as usual guarantees that result. How do we contribute to changing from business as usual to business as renewable? Arctic ice melting in winter!!!
6. Hydrogen Business: GM to introduce drivable Sequel auto next week. Boeing and Georgia Institute of Technology have developed fuel cell hydrogen powered, remotely piloted aircraft. Iowa Thin Film Technologies finishes tests of solar cell covered Army tent.
Ballard announces atmospheric, air cooled fuel cell stacks.
